Preventing Wisdom Teeth Woes
Wisdom teeth are the large, third molars that typically emerge between the ages of 17 to 21. (Some people don’t have wisdom teeth, but most folks have anywhere from one to four.) Theories abound regarding why we have wisdom teeth – one being that we once needed these large teeth to accommodate a diet of coarse, hard-to-chew food. Our refined diets don’t require these teeth now, and our smaller modern jaws simply can’t accommodate them. As a result, wisdom teeth can cause lots of problems as they try to erupt into the mouth. At Artistic Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Miami FL, Dr. Yon Elejabarrieta helps patients avoid wisdom teeth woes with safe, comfortable extraction.
Starting around age 6, permanent teeth begin to emerge to take the place of baby teeth. They’ve been forming for a while and follow a pre-determined timeline of eruption. Wisdom teeth typically start forming at around the 10-year mark and remain “silent” until age 17 or later. That’s when they often begin their journey through gum tissue and bone to take up residence in the mouth.
The Trouble Begins
It’s this journey toward eruption that can cause problems. A wisdom tooth can become encased in gum tissue or get stuck in bone. This is called impaction, and it typically results in pain and pressure. In rare cases, a cyst can form at the site of impaction, causing damage to jaw tissue. An infection called pericoronitis may occur that can spread to the throat if not treated in a timely manner.
If wisdom teeth do emerge, they often push other teeth out of position. Dental crowding can increase the risk of gum disease and dental decay, not to mention affecting the aesthetics of your smile.
